How to rescue the concorde fallacy.

چکیده
In a recent issue of TREE, Coleman and Gross’ claim that if life history theory is incorporated, it appears that the Concorde fallacy, originally proposed by Dawkin+, is itself a fallacy. They conclude that ‘There is no role for the Concorde fallacy in understanding parental-investment theory’. In this last comment they may be right. However, the idea is not new. Dawkins, in The Exrended fhenorype3, had earlier observed that while digger wasps seemed to commit the Concorde fallacy, it might be that ‘what appeared to be maladaptive was better interpreted as an optimum, given certain consrrainrs’ (p. 48, Dawkins’ italics). What Coleman and Gross propose is essentially the same idea: if certain constraints are taken into account, it appears that committing the Concorde fallacy may indeed be the best option. Coleman and Gross discuss the Concorde fallacy in relation to the entire lifespan. We think that the

Baseline event rate, the Concorde fallacy, and the topography of cardiac risk.
Cardiac risk stratification is the attempt to delineate who is at risk of cardiac event and who is not. Increasingly, the medical literature is filled with novel methods and markers of baseline risk assessment. This body of literature has been criticized broadly for making claims beyond what is statistically justified. In this hypothesis, we will explore an alterative explanation for the limita...
متن کاملThe Sunk Cost and Concorde Effects: Are Humans Less Rational Than Lower Animals?
The sunk cost effect is a maladaptive economic behavior that is manifested in a greater tendency to continue an endeavor once an investment in money, effort, or time has been made. The Concorde fallacy is another name for the sunk cost effect, except that the former term has been applied strictly to lower animals, whereas the latter has been applied solely to humans. The authors contend that th...
متن کاملParental investment theory: The role of past investment.
The role of past investment in parental-care behaviour has often been controversial. Some researchers have argued that organisms basing present investment on past investment are committing the 'Concorde fallacy'. Others have incorporated life history theory to suggest that investing according to past investment is one component of investing according to expected future reproductive success: a p...
متن کاملMnemonomics: The Sunk Cost Fallacy as a Memory Kludge
We study a sequential investment model and offer a theory of the sunk cost fallacy as an optimal response to limited memory. As new information arrives, a decision-maker may not remember all the reasons he began a project. The initial sunk cost gives additional information about future net profits and should inform subsequent decisions. We show that in different environments, this can generate ...
متن کاملAnimal decision-making and the 'Concorde fallacy'.
Both animals and humans appear to commit the 'Concorde Fallacy': they seem to gear their investment into a vital task to their past investment, though ideally they should gear it to the net expected future benefits (= benefits minus costs to complete the task)(1,2). By uncoupling past investment from expected benefits, animals have been variously shown to behave in a Concordian way, though in s...
